The common building that so often housed our celebrations and friendly gatherings was now a place of curiosity and fear. As I entered, the feelings of confusion and suspense projected by the others overwhelmed me to the point of despair. The large room was filled with villagers, awaiting the elders’ decision. Despite the idea of a circle of peers, I was quickly learning that the elders in the village did hold some sort of power in the community. It seemed as if no one else had noticed the hypocrisy in this.

Dear Aurora,
I shall begin my letter as I so often do: with an apology. It has been two moons since I have written, I know, but I do have good reason. There have been many shocking events in our village recently, and the tradesman whom I usually send my letters with did not come through on schedule. As I write, I am sitting on a woven mat on the frozen ground outside my hut. The fire is just beginning to smolder, and is offering me no warmth as of yet.
